Coded Creatures with Processing (1 day)

Workshop Coded Creatures

An introduction to creative coding, Processing and Github

Coded Creatures is a workshop in ‘Object Orientated Programming’. In three hours you can learn the basic principles of the programming language Processing and design your own character. At the end of the course you can ‘release’ this character into the virtual environment with the use of online code-sharing platform GitHub. So if you take part in Coded Creatures you will not only master creative programming, but also learn to take the the first steps in the code-community and contribute to an ever-growing artistic eco system.

Teacher: David Jonas

What will I learn?
In a session of three hours  you will familiarize yourself with creative coding within a Processing environment.

  • Creative coding is a generic name for a relatively new genre within computer programming, which is focused on associative and experimental handling of code.
  • Processing is a programming language, a development environment and an online community. Included in this learning process are a number of technical how-to’s, such as learning about syntax and Java programming language.
  • To see that the contrast between the practical side and creating art is not as big as you may expect. For example, by changing a few numbers your application will surely surprise you with some unexpected results.

Who is it for?
Coded Creatures is for students, teachers or in fact anyone within creative disciplines that wants to learn how to code. You don’t need experience, so don’t be afraid to try something new, like sinking your teeth into a piece of code.

What do I need?

  • Computer with Processing 2 installed
  • USB-stick

Who will teach me?
David Jonas is a computer science engineer and a creative coding teacher with a huge passion for the symbiotic relationship between the rule driven world of technology and the rule defiant world of art. Based in The Netherlands, he has been working mainly within the media art sector with cultural institutions, museums and artists all over the world.
